James Hayward

Author of Gypsy Jib

James Hayward lives in semi-retirement in Suffolk where he runs a second-hand bookshop in the pleasant market town of Halesworth.

Growing up in his home town of Dover he realised that his paternal grandmother was in some ways special. She was the last of a long line of Gypsies to be born in a wagon and still had knowledge of their language. It was this knowledge that seized his imagination and he began to collect and record it, firstly as random notes then as a formal card index and eventually as a computer record. He also put together a large collection of literature on the subject, but more importantly began to seek first-hand knowledge of this rapidly vanishing language.

Gradually a strong desire emerged to share the results of his research with others. Retirement gave him the opportunity and Gypsy Jib is the result.
